Incumbents in this position are responsible for interpreting and enforcing standards for local historic districts and aiding in developing preservation plans.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

●     Interprets historic district standards and reviews historic district building/demolition permits for compliance, under supervision.

●      Conducts site visits, interviews applicants and neighbors and gathers other relevant information to recommend action on permits and determine violations of standards, Reports findings to supervisor for recommendations to the Director.

●     Participates in developing Preservation Board meeting agenda items and informational materials and makes presentations to that Board which includes responding to questions from Board members.

●      Responds to inquiries from citizens and professionals regarding historic districts, tax credits and other related matters. Refers complex questions to a supervisor.

●     Notifies property owners regarding violations and refers unresolved violations to Housing Court, which may include providing evidence under oath.

●     Undertakes inspections of properties for assessment of historic character as well as providing information and an opinion on the structural integrity of buildings.

●     Reviews proposed projects and scopes of work for City programs using Federal funding under Section 106 of the National Preservation Act (revised), makes routine determinations and recommends action to the Director when necessary.

●     Participates in historic preservation projects such as architectural reconnaissance and survey, photographic documentation using 35mm and digital cameras, documents research and development of historic contexts, digital mapping and writes local and National Register nominations.


Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, or Architecture, OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
