Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC or “Tri-County”) serves as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Peoria-Pekin urbanized area in Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford counties. Tri-County promotes intergovernmental cooperation and regional planning to steward the region toward a collaborative vision for the future. Among its many activities, TCRPC coordinates local and regional transportation planning processes, supports local communities in the creation of comprehensive plans, and develops or coordinates regional environmental planning projects.

Job Summary

Tri-County seeks a full- or part-time planning intern to support staff in the implementation of its various planning and mapping projects. Examples of the varied work produced by staff are available for review on TCRPC’s website: https://tricountyrpc.org/. The length of the internship will be negotiated based on TCRPC’s staffing needs and the intern’s availability.

Job Duties

Tri-County manages a wide variety of planning and mapping projects. Internship job responsibilities will be identified with consideration for both the intern’s interests and skills and the immediate planning needs of TCRPC. All work will be performed under the mentorship and guidance of TCRPC staff. Examples of previous job responsibilities include:

  • Data collection and visualization (e.g., charts, graphs, or maps).
  • Research issues and data related to transportation and community planning.
  • Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to digitize aerial imagery and data.
  • Assist with external and internal communication for the online newsletter and website including copywriting, social media updates, photography, creation of flyers and marketing materials, and development of presentation graphics.
  • Prepare report outlines or drafts, record meeting minutes, and update mailing lists.
  • Assist in public engagement events and activities.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will demonstrate experience or interest in planning, community development or advocacy, geography, social or political science, environmental science, or the region. Candidates must be thoughtful, organized, and motivated to work in a team setting and on multiple projects.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is $15 an hour, up to 35 hours per week. Interns will also receive either validation for the parking deck below TCRPC offices, or a stipend to offset the cost of bus passes, bike maintenance, or taxi rides.
