HeartLands Conservancy (HLC) is a leading conservation and planning nonprofit in the St. Louis, Missouri, Metropolitan Area, and is located in downtown Belleville, IL. The organization works with landowners, governments, and the public to conserve southwestern Illinois' land and water resources, restore wildlife habitat, reduce impacts of flooding, plan resilient and healthy communities, and educate the public about natural and cultural resources.

HLC is seeking a highly motivated person to lead community programs and projects in planning, resiliency, and sustainable development.

Position Summary

The Community Planner works in an integrated team environment to plan and manage a variety of community planning and environmental projects. In support of the HLC mission, the selected candidate will be responsible for collaborating with partners, interacting with community leaders and the public, researching and analyzing land use and environmental information, generating plans and other technical documents, and researching and providing information to implement recommendations.

The position reports to the CEO and works closely with the Director of Finance and Administration on project budgeting, grant procedures, billing, procurement, and scheduling. The position also works collaboratively with senior leadership and program staff to ensure timeliness, effectiveness, and high quality of work and services.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master's degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, environmental design, geography, or related field, plus 2-5 years of relevant experience in urban or environmental planning; ideally with management of community planning projects and demographic analysis as a substantial proportion of experience. (or bachelor's degree plus 5-7 years of relevant experience).
  • AICP, ASLA, and/or LEED credential(s) a plus.
  • Experience with stormwater planning or permitting and/or bicycle & pedestrian planning desired.
