Overview

 Section 106 Training

 

This training covers the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, which applies any time a federal, federally assisted, or federally approved activity might affect a property listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

 At the conclusion of the training the participants will understand the following:

The relationship of federal historic preservation reviewrequirements to the National Historic Preservation Act;

  • How to determine whether a Section 106 review is required and who should participate in a review;
  • How to carry out or participate in the four-step procedure through which federal agencies fulfill their project planning review requirements under Section 106;
  • Alternatives and resolution to conflicts between federal or federally-assisted development and historic preservation

  

The Secretary of the Interior Standards

 This training covers the Secretary of the Interior Standards which determine the appropriateness of proposed project work on registered properties within the Historic Preservation Fund grant-in-aid program, the Standards for Rehabilitation are used to determine if a rehabilitation qualifies as a Certified Rehabilitation for Federal tax purposes.

 At the conclusion of the training the participants will understand the following: 

  • Understand how these Standards apply to a variety of historic resource types, including buildings, sites, objects and districts.
  • Understand how these Standards pertain to both exterior and interior work on historic buildings of all sizes, materials, and types.
  • Participants will have a better understanding of how to use the Standards and Guidelines for a preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or reconstruction project.
  • Gain knowledge of how to choose the appropriate treatment for a historic building.
