The Tiny House movement has recently gained recognition due to the popularity of television shows and social media. While some Americans choose to downsize to enjoy simpler living in a smaller space, tiny homes also have the potential to provide affordable housing options for residents. Explore how Veterans Community Project is building a specialized community of tiny homes and on-site services to provide stability for veterans and how other cities in the Kansas City region are reacting to the Tiny House movement.
This session will discuss the recent trend of tiny homes as housing options within cities. In January 2018, Veterans Community Project - Kansas City completed the first phase of “Veterans Village” to provide tiny homes for homeless veterans. The session will highlight the process to implement the tiny homes vision including coordination and collaboration between the public sector, private sector, and non-profit organizations.
Veterans Community Project, a local non-profit organization, will share the challenges and opportunities faced throughout the two-year planning process to implement the Veterans Village vision and the potential of using the tiny house model for other initiatives. The event also includes speakers from three other entities: (1) the planning consultant who assisted with site design, (2) the city who oversaw zoning and regulations related to development of the site, and (3) a local planner who has completed research related to the challenges of planning for tiny houses.
Participants in the event will obtain knowledge regarding:
(1) the first local implementation of a tiny house neighborhood,
(2) coordination with multiple entities to implement a vision,
(3) consideration of policy and regulatory changes to support tiny homes,
(4) opportunities to apply the tiny house model in other communities.
