Overview

Lenexa City Center is the result of a long-term visioning process that started in 1997 with Vision 2020. The idea was to develop a central meeting place for residents, with a new downtown and gathering area integrating retail sites, commercial uses, entertainment opportunities, community activity centers, and public and institutional buildings. Participants in this session will understand:

  • The evolution of the mixed use concept within the development;

  • The variety of uses that are developing in Lenexa City Center;

  • How city staff continues to work with developers to foster projects that include a mixing of uses specifically through development phasing;

  • Use of development incentives; and

  • Use of public-private partnerships not only to bring the Lenexa City center vision to fruition, but also to ensure the proposed development meets the City Center Design Guidelines.

Lenexa City Center has definitely been a long term vision that has had several starts and stops, included several development partners, and weathered the economic downturn. The role all of these factors played in determining the final product will also be touched on as part of the presentation. Other topics that will be a part of the discussion include lessons learned throughout the process and the important role design guidelines continues to play in the development process. The activity will include a walking tour of the Civic Campus that includes city hall, a recreation center, public market, and satellite campus for a local university. Development projects that will be highlighted include a new public library, Shawnee Mission School District aquatics center, and the District apartment, retail and office development with structured parking.
