Overview

The 2018 APA Bi-State Conference is a gathering of professional planners and planning officials across the Midwest. The 2018 conference takes place October 24-26 at the InterContinental on the Plaza in Kansas City. A group of more than 350 individuals, including professional planners, planning officials, lawyers, architects and developers, are expected to attend. The conference will host attendees from Kansas, Missouri, and the greater Midwest region.

  • Planning for Beer: Mashing Up Land Use & Community Development

    The mobile workshop excursion to the Torn Label brewery is intended to provide attendees with an overview of the economic development potential for local craft beer breweries and their ability to catalyze and shape markets, the regulatory and policy challenges facing future breweries, and their ability to create engaging and vibrant communities.

  • Planning for Streetscape Enhancements

    A mobile tour of streetscape enhancements will include projects ranging from a small downtown in Lee's Summit, a multi-phased enhancement along an urban corridor in midtown Kansas City along Main Street, a series of blocks led by developers in Mission's West Gateway FBC District, the Streetcar Starter Line in Downtown KC, and a unique streetscape in KC's Historic River Market District.

  • Plaza Walking Tour

    Get to know the conference neighborhood, the first shopping center in the world, through this exciting walking tour! Designed to emulate Seville, Spain by JC Nichols historic Country Club Plaza is a wonderful walk that is necessary for all planners. This tour will include the Plaza as well as a view of Brush Creek.

  • Green & Beans - Shawnee Mission Schools - Center for Academic Achievement - Bringing Education, Green Design and Urban Farming Together

    Participants will visit the Center for Academic Achievement. This redevelopment project consolidated administrative and academic programs from four different locations incorporating green infrastructure and an urban farm which supports the on-site culinary program.

  • Tour of Kansas City Transit Investments

    In the summer of 2018, RideKC will begin construction of Prospect MAX, the city's third bus rapid transit corridor. Tour participants will also ride the Kansas City Streetcar from Union Station to the River Market and back. The tour will conclude by travelling along the planned Main Street Extension of the Kansas City Streetcar. Tour includes bus travel, light refreshments and guides.

  • KC Port Authority Tour

    This exciting mobile tour will show off Port KC’s plans for the Berkley Riverfront, including an extension of the KC Streetcar, Bar K (one of the first private dog parks in the US) and Union (the largest single phase Multi-Family project ever built in Metropolitan KC). A fun and exciting morning of learning how a Port Authority can support development in your community.

  • Missouri Riverfront Parks Planning: Fireworks, Festivals and Floodplain Management

    This mobile tour will showcase parks planning along the Missouri riverfront, specifically English Landing Park and Platte Landing Park in the City of Parkville. Attendees will travel via bus to Parkville to see examples of how the City has implemented its Parks Master Plan, coordinates programs/events in the park, runs a parks department, and addresses flooding despite development pressures.
