Walking Tour: If This Stream Could Talk

Thursday, October 6, 1:30 - 3:15 pm (including transportation)

Workshop Leaders: Chris Sanders, Neil Eisenberger, Matt Maranzana

Location: Departs from hotel.

CM Credits: 1.5

At its core the Tower Grove Park East Stream restoration is a stream daylighting and infrastructure project, but in reality it is so much more. This session will explore how a stream daylighting project has pushed the boundary of how we address infrastructure in the public realm. Several focus areas will be discussed to illustrate the depth impact a project of this type can have on the community.

The session will start at the Stupp Center conference room with a brief 10-15 min overview of the project and the components listed above. We will then walk the project site and experience the elements up close with a curated tour by the design team from Lamar Johnson Collaborative. The format will be casual allowing for open dialogue during the walk so that attendees can learn more about any elements of the project they find interesting.

Walking Tour: Equitable Community Development - Achieving Empowerment Through Community-Based Neighborhood Planning

Workshop Leaders: Tim Breihan, David Nehrt-FLores, Laurna Godwin, Alexa Seda

Location: Departs from hotel.

This walking tour and workshop will explore equity-based community development planning through a case study of the North Central Plan for the Vandeventer and Covenant Blu Grand Center neighborhoods in St. Louis and how lessons learned can be applied to city-wide neighborhood planning being conducted by the City of St. Louis. The workshop will be led by collaborators in the plan’s making from H3 Studio, Deaconess Center for Child Well-Being, Vector Communications, and City of St. Louis.

The City is working on updated neighborhood plans for every neighborhood in the City. The initiative seeks to further equitable development and outcomes by prioritizing geographies that have been historically disinvested and/or negatively impacted by past racist practices like redlining. This initiative is coordinated with the City’s Vision 2030 Equitable Economic Development Strategy and the 2018 Equity Indicators Baseline Report.

The North Central Plan is one of the first plans to be completed within the City’s new framework. The lessons learned have the potential to impact the City’s long-term policy planning for a more just and equitable future.
